'One aspirin a day' has a different outcome than one might expect.
Taking just one aspiring a day may be the cause of up to 15% of patients currently on dialysis. (The New England Journal of Medicine December 20, 2001)
In addition to kidney disease, these presumably 'safe' pills are also responsible for 22% of all heart disease cases in the US. Aren't we taking it for heart disease? (Archive of Internal Medicine June 2000)
Over-the-counter drugs kill 16,000 Americans per year. (JAMA1998)
The costs of complications of these drugs are endless.
Add the costs for kidney, liver, colon, and stomach damage, (N Engl J Med. 1999 Jun17;340(24):1888-99) headaches, "The development of chronic daily headaches is associated with long-term use of NSAIDs" (2003 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research), and joint complications and you've got a real moneymaker for the pharmaceutical industry.
In addition to the high costs associated with these conditions let's look at one last staggering and sobering statistic:
Over 250,000 people die every year as a direct result of conventional medical treatment. This figure includes 106,000 deaths from medical mistakes. (Journal American Medical Association 2000 Jul 26; 284(4):483-5)
Do less people really die from mistakes than when they do it correctly?
These 250,000 deaths per year make medical treatment the THIRD leading cause of death in the US. (Journal of the American Medical Association Volume 284 July 26, 2000)

- Medical Treatment for these and other diseases.
Ironic, isn't it?

Aspirin, Acetaminophen May Prolong the Flu
The above is the title of an article on the DrKoop.com web site from Dec. 06, 2000 Reuters Health Information. The article reports on research by Karen I. Plaisance, MD; Philip A. Mackowiak, MD published in the Achieves of Internal Medicine. The essence of the article states that taking aspirin or similar drugs to decrease a fever will increase the duration of the Flu.
For many years common practice was to treat the fever of a Flu by taking aspirin and reducing the fever. This new research has confirmed what chiropractors and others have been saying for years. Fever is a defense mechanism designed to help the immune system by raising body temperature.
The article was a review of several studies. In this article it was revealed that flu sufferers who took one of the anti-fever medications such as aspirin, were sick an average of 3.5 days longer than people who did not take any of the drugs.
According to coauthor, Dr. Karen I. Plaisance, "The extra sick days may be an acceptable trade-off for the relief they get from such medications". She continued, "Depending on what it is you have to get done ... you may be willing to take that. Some busy people would rather be somewhat sick for a longer time than be nearly wiped out for a shorter period."
According to the report, the investigators found that anti-fever drugs such as aspirin or Tylenol, prolonged the duration of the flu. On average, flu symptoms lasted 5.3 days in participants who did not take aspirin or acetaminophen, compared with 8.8 days in people who took the anti-fever drugs. Even an analysis that took into account the severity of illness, the use of anti-fever drugs was still linked to longer-lasting illness.
According to the authors the mechanism that links the drugs to prolonged flu symptoms is unclear. However, they do mention the possibility that reducing fever may interfere with the immune system responses to an infection. In other studies on reducing fever, similar findings were reported in cases of chickenpox.
The underlying message of these studies should suggest that interfering with the defense mechanisms of the body, such as fever, may reduce some symptoms but will prolong the time the body needs to fight off infections and illness.
Aspirin Dangerous and Ineffective for People with Heart Failure
People who are diagnosed with heart failure and follow a treatment regimen that includes blood thinners such as aspirin or coumadin could be putting their health into more danger.
Researchers stated that just because heart failure patients stand a greater chance of experiencing a heart attack or stroke doesn't automatically make them appropriate candidates for antithrombotic therapy.
Study Comparing Blood-Thinning Therapies to no Antithrombotic Therapy
· Participants included 279 patients who were diagnosed with heart failure that required diuretic therapy
· Participants were divided into three groups, aspirin therapy, warfarin therapy and no antithrombotic therapy
Results of the Study
· Aspirin and warfarin didn't provide the patients with any valuable health benefits
· There didn't appear to be any substantial differences of incidences of death, nonfatal heart attacks or nonfatal stroke in the three groups of the study
· Patients in the aspirin group had increased chances of experiencing serious gastrointestinal problems
· Cases of minor bleeding complications were primarily seen among the aspirin and warfarin group
· Patients in the aspirin therapy group were twice as likely as the patients in the warfarin group to face hospitalization for cardiovascular complications, particularly worsening cases of heart failure during the first 12 months following the study
Based on the results from this study, experts said that treatment of heart failure involving a multitude of drugs that proved to be ineffective should be eliminated as a treatment option.
Aspirin Not Recommended for Heart Disease Anymore
By Dr. John G F Cleland
Despite the vast size of these meta-analyses, the evidence in support of aspirin preventing atherosclerotic events is still inconclusive.
The third meta-analysis from the Antithrombotic Trialists' Collaboration contains data on over 100,000 patients at high risk of atherosclerotic events, representing more than 250 000 patient years of follow up. (1)
This meta-analysis and its predecessors form the major argument for the current widespread fashion of prescribing aspirin to such patients. (2) (3) It is an enormous body of research and the collaboration is to be congratulated for having gathered so much data. However, quality as well as quantity matters. And the quality is such that the results can only be inconclusive.
· The series of meta-analyses on the antiplatelet activity of aspirin overvalues aspirin's effectiveness and safety
· All the large long term trials of aspirin after myocardial infarction show no effect on mortality
· Aspirin may change the way vascular events present rather than prevent them
· This may lead to a "cosmetic" reduction in non-fatal events and an increase in sudden death
· Data on the safety and cost-benefit of aspirin are inadequate
· Advocating the use of aspirin for preventing atherosclerotic events diverts attention from other, more effective, drugs
Trials Do Not Show That Aspirin Saves Lives
Meta-analysis is increasingly viewed either as a way of verifying that the outcome of an individual trial is consistent with the rest of the known data or as a way of generating a hypothesis.
However, in the absence of a definitively positive trial, many consider meta-analysis inadequate evidence for clinical decision making. The series of meta-analyses from the trialists' collaboration contains serious additional flaws. (3-6)
It is remarkable and probably statistically significant how seldom trials of antiplatelet agents have shown benefit on their selected primary outcome. The choice of the primary endpoint by the Antithrombotic Trialists' Collaboration is arbitrary and suspect.
FDA Says Many Prescription Drug Ads Are Deceptive
The US Food and Drug Administration regularly send out citation letters to many drug companies for overstating the effects of their drugs in advertising. Tom Abrams, the chief watchdog at the Food and Drug Administration for deceptive advertising, says some ads stretch the truth with overstated claims of effectiveness and understated descriptions of side effects. ABC News aired this report on January 3, 2001.
According to the report, every year, the FDA sends about 100 letters to drug companies demanding changes in television commercials, magazine ads and other promotional materials. Many companies are repeat offenders and continue to use deceptive advertising. Some examples include the allergy drug Claritin. According to the FDA the makers of this drug are repeat offenders. Since 1997, the manufacturers have been told 10 times to change their advertisements. Additionally, makers of two other allergy drugs, Flonase and Flovent have been cited 12 times for commercials the FDA claimed were misleading.
Dr. Sharon Levine of RX Alliance says, "This is intentionally misleading, the drug companies are trying to suggest they can deliver more than they do." Amazingly, the ABC story noted that the FDA has never taken a company to court. They noted that most offenders simply change their advertisements and come up with another sales approach.
Most Drugs on the Market Are Useless and Harmful
People running the drug companies are aware of the fraudulent nature of their business. According to Allen Roses, Vice President of GlaxoSmithKline, one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, "Vast majority of drugs only work in 30 or 50% of people."
When he says "work," I assume he is giving credit for even the slightest positive change and not talking about resolving the patients' illnesses because essentially 100% of the drugs used to treat chronic diseases fail to cure the patient. Yet, used by pharmaceutical companies to promote their products might cause you to think otherwise. They refer to their drugs in ways that suggest their inventions commonly cure chronic diseases, by calling their products, "antihypertensive" and "anti-diabetic" as if these chemicals would eradicate hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes maybe something like antibiotics kill bacteria and cure infections. The truth is, no doctor has ever seen a patient cured of high blood pressure or diabetes with either class of medication, no matter how much they might wish it to be otherwise. By and large, drugs do little, if anything, to improve the well-being and/or longevity of people suffering with chronic diseases, but are undeniably a direct source of death, disability and suffering.
Approximately 2 to 7 % of all hospital admissions are caused by medications prescribed to patients, and approximately 70% of these incidences are judged as preventable.
Approximately 28% of all emergency department visits are a result of taking prescription drugs.
The drugs most commonly implicated are: NSAIDs, anti-platelets, seizure medications, anti-diabetic drugs, anti-hypertensive (diuretics and beta-blockers), inhaled corticosteroids, and cardiac drugs.
Chiropractic & Senior Citizens
Chiropractic treatment is available for senior citizens and offers a variety of different health care strategies, depending on the severity of the condition, as well as the general health of the patient. For those seniors who are in good physical health and lead an active physical lifestyle, chiropractic can offer significant help in many cases. These patients are treated with pain relief and stabilization in mind so that they can return to the active lifestyle that they enjoy.
Occasionally, some seniors enter our office with significant additional health problems. Sometimes these additional health problems can slow down the progress that may be expected under chiropractic care. While there can still be wonderful benefits for these types of cases, the ultimate goals must be tempered so as to be realistic for the particular patient.
Goals that can be expected.
- Complete pain relief with return to active lifestyle.
- Partial pain relief with return to most activities.
- Partial pain relief with return to only specific activities.
- Slowing down the progression of the condition in advanced degenerative situations.
If you notice in the goals listed above, there is quite a difference between goal 1 and goal 4. This is usually due to the health history of the patient, with goal 4 patients having significant degeneration already present, inactive lifestyle, or perhaps significant other health issues already in place. Even in goal 4 patients there can significant help attained because these patients typically appreciate the opportunity to slow down the rate at which their conditions become worse.
Upon examination and consultation, the goals that can be expected will be explained to you. Please remember that those patients in this category need to be more patient with treatment as they typically respond slower to care than patients who are younger. While this fact may seem obvious, it needs to be stated so that patients can have proper expectations.
In many cases there are no unrealistic goals, just an unrealistic time frame.
We look forward to helping you in the best way possible. You can be assured of receiving the most up-to-date health care treatment and information available anywhere today.
Sick People Take Medications Healthy People Are Drug-Free
The goal of every doctor should be to help make his or her patients drug-free by teaching him or her to become healthy. Unfortunately, most doctors know only drug-therapy for patients' problems and the result is fat and sick people carrying around bags full of prescriptions and they are not one speck healthier or happier. (And you wonder why so many doctors complain about the practice of medicine these days. How would you feel if all of your projects ended in failure?) To make matters worse, well-intentioned doctors are making their prescription decisions based upon fraudulent and incomplete information paid for by pharmaceutical companies blind to the suffering of their customers; these businesses manipulate the research studies in order to boost sales. This should not surprise you, after all, pharmaceutical companies are in the business of profiting from your sickness and, as a result of their efforts, they are considered among the most successful of all businesses worldwide. Drug companies spend billions of dollars and employ thousands of people to try to demonstrate the slightest benefits from their products. From the beginning, the "investigations" used to sell their products are designed so that the results will turn out favorable why not? They are paying for the project. And if the results do not turn out as expected, then these companies bury any research findings that weigh negatively upon their products.
The US government turns a blind eye. According to top researchers, we can no longer rely upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for protection from useless and dangerous drugs, since this organization acts essentially as a tool for the pharmaceutical industries.
All this dishonesty is very profitable; consumers spent $154.4 billion dollars in one year (2001) on medications that in many cases do more harm than good and prescription drug spending rises 15% to 18% per year.
All the while, hopeful patients are lulled into believing these miracle potions will save them. If the truth were to be known, more of these same ill people would take matters into their own hands and save themselves with a healthy diet, some exercise, and clean habits, rather than waiting to be saved by "technological breakthroughs." When was the last miracle drug invented? Penicillin discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming. It now causes antibiotic resistant infections. Relying on drugs from the outside hasn't worked yet. Chiropractors help you discover health from within, without drugs.
Using Aspirin & Ibuprofen Can Increase Your Breast Cancer Risk by 50%
A continued debate over whether or not aspirin, ibuprofen or other related pain relievers influence the risk of breast cancer has just moved closer to one side: According to a study, taking aspirin or ibuprofen may boost a woman's chance of succumbing to breast cancer.
These findings merely stress concerns regarding the potential toxicities from long-term regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Breast Cancer Risks Revealed
Researchers evaluated data on some 114,000 women (ages 22-85) who participated in the California Teachers Study. The women were free of breast cancer when they enrolled in the study a decade ago. (At that time, the women informed researchers how often and how long they had used aspirin and ibuprofen.)
During a follow-up period, some 2,400 of the women were diagnosed with breast cancer of known receptor status. When researchers broke their findings down by pain reliever or type of breast cancer, the results showed:
· Taking ibuprofen every day for at least five years increased a woman's chance of developing breast cancer by 50 percent, compared to women who did not regularly take the drug.
Daily use of aspirin for five years or more caused a woman's risk of ER/PR-negative breast cancer (not sensitive to estrogen or progesterone) to spike by 80 percent, compared to non-regular aspirin users.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:
Even though there are plenty of published studies showing the dangers of over-the-counter medications, many are still unaware of the basic facts.
Medications such as aspirin may still seem harmless to most people, but you are one of the enlightened who knows better, and that they are dangerous and potentially deadly. Aside from increasing your chances of getting breast cancer, taking over-the-counter painkillers for six months or more can double your chances of dying from a stroke or heart attack.

How to Treat Your Pain Without Causing More Damage
The best way to avoid drugs and still get relief from your pain is to utilize treatments that address the underlying cause of your symptoms. Obviously, pain can result from a number of different causes, but there are certain steps you can take that end up addressing many of these causes at the same time.
My favorite options for treating the underlying cause of pain are as follows:
· Start taking a high-quality fish or cod liver oil. Omega-3 fats, which are found in fish or cod liver oil, are precursors to mediators of inflammation called prostaglandins. In fact, that is how Vioxx and other anti-inflammatory painkillers work, they manipulate prostaglandins.
Eliminate grains and sugars from your daily diet. Sugar and grain avoidance for most people will lower insulin levels. Elevated insulin levels are one of the most important reasons why inflammatory prostaglandins are produced. That is why stopping sugar and sweets is so important to controlling your pain and other types of chronic illnesses.
· Optimize your intake of vitamin D by getting daily sun exposure. If sun exposure is hard to come by for one reason or another, cod liver oil is an excellent alternative source of vitamin D you can use in the meantime. It's also extremely important to have your vitamin D levels tested to know where your levels fall before you begin supplementation.
· Retool your diet based on your body's unique metabolic type. Metabolic typing is a tool I have seen work in thousands of patients to reduce their pain.
There are also some very effective natural alternatives to anti-inflammatory drugs that can help provide temporary relief for your pain while you are in the process of implementing the above strategies.
· If you are a woman with monthly pain from menstrual cramps, two excellent herbal alternatives specific to that type of pain are Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus) and Wild Yam (Dioscorea vilosa).
