What is Spinal Decompression?

Chiropractic Adjustment Penn Hills, PAOur New Kensington office relies on the Triton DTS model to perform spinal decompression therapy for our patients. The model is also known as a “traction table” and works by isolating the troubled area of the back.

Using a cyclical pattern, spinal decompression therapy alternates through a “distraction” phase and “relaxation” phase – until you begin to feel relief in the affected area.

Spinal decompression sessions last approximately 30 minutes and are repeated as needed until desired (pain-free) results are achieved. In essence, spinal decompression therapy relies on the vacuum effect, which occurs when the herniated or bulging area of the spine reacts to negative pressure and ultimately realigns into its proper placement.

Conditions Spinal Decompression Treats

Spinal decompression therapy is not necessarily the best option for all patients, particularly those who are pregnant, enduring chronic osteoporosis or are addressing obesity.

However, this method can prove effective in treating any of the following painful conditions:

  • Herniated discs
  • Low back pain, including sciatica pain
  • Numbness in the arm and hand
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Headaches

For those with ongoing, painful back and neck issues, decompression therapy can be a safe, non-surgical route toward pain-free days.
